As chefs, we can’t get enough of innovative cooking tools. One thing that has always been on our wish list has been an outdoor, wood-burning pizza oven. We imagine nights spent around the oven with our dear friends, stoking the fire, creating custom pizza doughs, and experimenting with toppings to find exquisite new flavor combinations. There would also be wine. And beer. There’s no point in creating new pizza taste sensations without working on our beverage pairings in tandem. We are professionals after all.
Alas, one look at the mountain of snow outside our back door in March tells us that Maine’s just not a practical place to invest thousands of dollars in an outdoor pizza kitchen. The grilling season is simply too short. What we required was a practical, high quality alternative. The solution to our needs appeared to be a product called “Kettle Pizza” which we saw on the morning news. Kettle Pizza is a kit that turns a Weber kettle style grill into a backyard, charcoal and wood fired pizza oven. Since we had Weber kettle grills at our house and at our family’s summer cottage in Harpswell, the Kettle Pizza looked to be the perfect solution.
As luck would have it, George Peters – one of Kettle Pizza’s founders – had been staying at our inn in Kennebunk on the exact day we found out about the Kettle Pizza. Even though he had just checked out that morning, George was gracious enough to to turn back around, and drive up from Massachusetts to talk to us about the Kettle Pizza. It’s an absolute pleasure to meet someone so committed to his products!
We have been putting the Kettle Pizza through its paces for a while now, and I must say that we are truly impressed by the quality and performance of the product. The Kettle Pizza is very well made and it has been an excellent addition to our outdoor cooking arsenal. Take it from two experienced chefs: The Pizza Kettle will really help you up your backyard culinary game.
More after the break, but here is a short video we shot in Harpswell, Maine. We prepared our Lobster White Pizza in the Kettle Pizza on our trusty Weber grill. The results were delectably satisfying.
The KettlePizza kits range in price from $149.95 to $299.95, depending on the configuration you purchase. Our kit has the high temperature grate and baking tombstone. The kit also came with a professional grade pizza peel. The build quality is outstanding, and we expect to get years of service from the pizza oven. Kettle Pizza is made in the USA at KettlePizza’s Groveland, Massachusetts facility.
If you’ve ever wanted a backyard pizza oven – and face it, who hasn’t? – the Kettle Pizza kit is an extremely cost-effective way to realize your dreams. We have traveled with our grill and kit. If you ever want to be the envy of everyone at a tailgate, start firing up lobster pizza!
